Pregnant women should not drink more than one cup of coffee daily. But it shouldn’t go beyond that. It’s hard to tell how much caffeine is in a cup of coffee. Several things, like the brand of coffee and the size of the cup, can change the amount.

You can drink coffee if it’s not too strong.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) says pregnant women should not drink more than 200 milligrams (mg) of caffeine daily. Depending on the brand, that’s about one 8-ounce cup of coffee.

Even though the official recommendation is 200 mg or less daily, some experts think that even small amounts of caffeine may be dangerous during pregnancy. Studies have shown that babies who are small for their gestational age or at risk of growth restriction are born to mothers who drink more than 200 mg of caffeine daily.

If the National Institutes of Health are correct, pregnant women who drink less than 200 milligrams of caffeine a day, or half a cup of coffee a day, may have babies a little smaller than those born to women who don’t drink caffeine.

It is thought that caffeine narrows the blood vessels in the uterus and placenta, which can cut off blood flow to the fetus and slow its growth. Caffeine can also mess with the stress hormones in a fetus, which can cause babies to gain weight quickly after birth and put them at risk for obesity, heart disease, and diabetes later in life.

But other studies have not found a link between moderate caffeine use (less than 200 mg a day) during pregnancy and problems like low birth weight, stunted growth, miscarriage, or early birth. Because of this, most obstetricians and midwives agree that pregnant women can have a small amount of caffeine.
